Flight Controls Systems Engineer

Bell Helicopter is seeking a self-motivated Flight Controls Systems Engineer to join Bell’s Innovation Team and support the development of new and novel products and platforms. The systems requirements associated with the integration of vehicles in urban environments, including Air Taxi and Product transportation/delivery are challenging and exciting. The emerging concept vehicles provide opportunities for systems engineering, simulation and test of configurations and technologies that will shape the future of aviation. This position will be part of a diverse team of engineers capable of executing in a fast-paced environment.

Engineering opportunities are available in the development, integration, and testing of Flight Control Systems and Control Laws.

These positions may be located at Bell Helicopter’s headquarters facility in Ft. Worth, TX or the Bell Flight Research Center in Arlington, TX.

The Flight Control Systems Engineer is responsible for (but not limited to) supporting the following:

  • Design and test of Flight Control Systems (FCS) with embedded DO-178 software and DO-254 complex hardware, including Fly-By-Wire Flight Control Systems. Specifically the integrated hardware and software specification, design, implementation, and verification of a flight control system per the DO-178 and DO-254 standards.

  • System and software design, requirements management, systems specifications, interface management, system safety assessment, verification and validation testing in desktop simulation environment and systems integration labs, aircraft flight test, and aircraft/system qualification and certification

  • Development of an integrated FCS’s systems architecture, redundancy management, electronic hardware design and integration, and actuator design and integration.

  • Development of algorithms, processes, models, simulations, etc. that support aircraft control at all architectural and design levels, specifically: air vehicle flight control laws, flight director, navigation, guidance, and autonomous systems control algorithms


Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering. Applied Sciences (Physics) Mechanical Engineering may be considered with applicable flight control systems development experience.

  • Master’s Degree in the Engineering disciplines mentioned above is preferred.

Position Requirements:

  • Experience at all levels will be considered with a minimum of 2 years specific experience with flight controls, software, avionics, or electrical systems integration, development, and testing.

  • Familiarity with most or all of: RTCA DO-160, MIL-STD-810, RTCA DO-178, RTCA DO-254, SAE ARP4754A, SAE ARP4761, 14 CFR Part 27 and Part 29 for commercial and military qualification and certification of aircraft systems.

Experience with Primary Development Environment, or equivalent:

  • MathWorks MATLAB / Simulink with Stateflow and Embedded Coder

  • C/C code

  • C# test scripts

  • IBM Rational DOORS

  • Serena Dimensions / PVCS

  • Git
