This position is contingent upon a future contract award (expected in Q4 of 2017) supporting a Missiles & Fire Control program within the Engineering & Technology function, as well as Customer funding for this position.
Lockheed Martin is seeking a Materials and Process Engineer to perform analysis, research, and design for development and production programs. The assignment involves addressing complex technical problems and provides solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious. The candidate’s responsibilities include performing materials research, evaluation, and selection as part of the mechanical engineering design for development and production applications. The candidate will also perform evaluation and selection of engineering processes required to produce mechanical hardware meeting program requirements, in addition to coordinating materials failure analysis efforts in the Materials & Processes Lab or other labs. This applies to the planning, design, development, and testing of new aerospace, defense, and advanced technology products and solutions.
The candidate responsibilities will include elements of project leadership and coordination of technical, schedule, and budgetary issues related to the materials testing, evaluation, and selection for assembly systems, subsystems, and components. Tasks include performing preliminary materials and processes research and evaluation, followed by detailed testing and selection on assembly systems and subsystems. Tasks may also include writing detailed laboratory test plans and procedures followed by test supervision or monitoring. The candidate will also be required to write Materials specification and Process specifications in support of program fabrication and processing.
The candidate will provide technical documentation and input to data packages to support peer and customer reviews, and present materials test data to program and customer personnel at technical interchange meetings and design reviews. Responsible for research, test, and process development of high temperature coatings and materials for aerospace systems and components. Experience with materials evaluation tools for materials selection is desired.
The candidate will also have responsibilities involving Materials Review Board (MRB) activities as related to engineering materials and processes including coordination with other mechanical engineering disciplines (e.g. Stress and Thermal) as required to determine the proper course of action with suspect hardware.
Basic Qualifications -The candidate must have earned a BS or MS degree from an accredited college in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or other related fields. - The Candidate should be considered experienced, but is still a learner in the materials science and technology fields. -Materials & Processes experience in the aerospace, automotive, or printed wiring board assembly (PWA) industry is required. -The candidate must have a demonstrated strength in Materials & Processes engineering with a desire to learn more, and has demonstrated strong problem solving and analytical skills. -The candidate must possess creativity and innovation in solving issues related to materials and processes selection in support of design performance and materials failure analysis. -The candidate must be capable of performing in a fast paced, dynamic environment, while multitasking as part of an inclusive engineering team, and needs to have experience interfacing with other engineering functions (for example stress, dynamics, design, manufacturing, suppliers, reliability, quality, mechanical labs, environmental labs, customers). -The candidate must have experience with Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint). -Excellent writing and verbal communication skills for generating materials & processes test plans, reports, documentation, and potentially proposals are necessary. -Candidate must have proven leadership with demonstrated interpersonal skills. -Candidate must have the ability to travel. -Candidate must be able to obtain a US Department of Defense Secret Clearance
The candidate must have knowledge / experience in the following skill sets: -Chemical analysis of metals, alloys, composites, plastics/polymers, and some ceramics -Mechanical testing, including hardness testing, impact testing, creep and stress failures, tensile testing, specimen machining and preparation -Metallurgical testing, including SEM analysis, sample preparation, and microscopic examination -Polymer materials, testing, and polymer compositions -Adhesive bonding -Surface preparation and adhesive bond testing (epoxy, etc.) -Materials identification, plating options for designs, and electroplating
Desired skills It is desirable that the candidate have experience with a number (but not all) of the following categories: -Conducting failure analysis -Materials finishing processes -Corrosion and corrosion testing -MIL-STD related to mechanical and/or electrical hardware and associated environments -Different materials selector software -Emerging technologies such as additive manufacturing -Fracture mechanics, including fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness testing, -Mechanical testing in elevated thermal environments -Non-Destructive Testing, including liquid penetrant testing, Mag Particle Inspection, and X-Ray Inspection -Atomic emission spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, material identification, plating identification, and classical wet chemistry/qualitative chemistry -Electronic assemblies design knowledge, and related failure analyses -Materials and manufacturing methods associated with PWBs, PWAs, and electrical harnesses (power and communication/data) -Soldering processes and material analysis -Manufacture of BGA/CGA -Electrical components design (PEMs, surface mount, wire lead, etc.) -Fastener testing methods -Weld Engineering -Painting/Coating process and adhesion
